Having a dog this size is a full time job. Realizing how fast he is growing makes me worry about future "accidents". Housebreaking was in full swing the minute his paws came into the house. Great danes, by the way, are house dogs. They can not adjust to the extreme heat and cold of our climate and therefore are house dogs. Another thing I did not know. He is crate trained and done very well with house breaking, and so far he has not attempted to escape from the backyard.
Romeo, Morgans french bulldog mix, is a different story. I keep him at my house during the day most of the week while she works. Love the dog, but wish he was a little better trained. He brought his "bobo" over to play with. Zeus and Romeo played with it all day. Tug of war, chase, fighting over it, The fun seemed endless. Then it ended. The bobo had ripped apart and the stuffing was all over the floor. Most people do not know that the stuffing inside of pet toys is toxic, and lethal to your dog. The stuffing creates a blockage that requires surgery to prevent death.
Of course, Zeus ingested some of it before I could get it all cleaned up. Romeo did not participate in the stuffing buffet. He has been there, done that, won't wear the t-shirt. I felt I picked it all up in time to prevent any illness or emergency surgeries.
Zeus went for his 9 week check up at the vet the next day. Time for some wormer and shots. We waited for about an hour in the waiting room, evidently there was some sort of cat emergency. I did not know you could have a cat emergency, but to each pet lover his own. We are finally escorted into our private waiting room to wait for the vet.
Zeus begins to drool on the exam table. He begins to gag and then vomits all over the table. What do you do? Was I supposed to; clean it, leave it, put him on the floor, ask for assistance? I did not know. Fortunately the vet came in and saw what had happened. He scooped up the vomit and took it to the back to EXAMINE it. I was ready to gag. So was Zeus, he promptly vomited 2 more times. He then begins to whine and howl as if he is dying. I am trying to calm him down when I realize he has got to go outside STAT!!!
The moment his paws touched down outside he began to spray the landscape with vile diarrhea. It truly looked as if he had a liquid fertilizer attached to him. My concern was growing. I brought in what I thought was a healthy dog, and if he repeated this spectacle back inside the little room, we just could never come back.
I took him back inside and the vet informed me he had eaten the toy stuffing and was indeed ill. Really, I had not figured that out on my own!
Zeus has been placed on a white food only diet until Monday. Rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, only those items can be eaten. I rush him to the car, the one Amanda paid to have detailed for me three days earlier, and began the race for the house. He began to vomit in my car. He vomited in my center console, that was special. I was very concerned, if he followed his vomiting the same way he did at the vets office, I was in trouble.
Fortunately, I got him home with no more secretions. I began the process of cooking for him. David is in Tyler working for the next 3 days. I will have to handle this on my own. The dog eats a lot. I was up all night cooking. It was ridiculous. I cooked it, he ate it, and then he lost it out of one end or the other. I could not leave him outside, because it was cold. He was smashing himself into the door and I thought one of them was going to have some serious damage. He whined like he was starving all night. He ate; an entire box of mashed potatoes, a bag of egg noodles, a box of shell noodles, and a box of mac n cheese minus the cheese. "We" finally fell asleep sometime around 4 AM. Unfortunately for me he got up a few times. When Morgan arrived with Romeo she let me know it was not "all good in my hood."
When my husband comes home, I expect some extra form of appreciation. Flowers, massage, mani/pedi, all options to compensate for what I already feel will be another night of disaster.
The giant bag of rice is cooked. Lets get this party started!!
